Un gol segnato all’ultimo minuto decide la finale terzo-quarto posto del Fenix Trophy 2024. La sfida tutta inglese tra Enfield Town e Lewes, due squadre che si conoscono bene, perché partecipi della stessa categoria inglese, va ai secondi, che riescono ad imporsi con il risultato di 2-1.

Una partita dominata territorialmente dal Lewes, rallentata nei ritmi dal grande caldo e dai minori stimoli che la sfida si portava con sé, ma rimasta sempre in equilibrio per la tenuta difensiva dell’Enfield Town, unita allo scarso killer instinct degli uomini di mr. Russell. La zampata di Whelpdale a 90′ superato evita i calci di rigore (venerdì la squadra di Enfield ne aveva tirati ben 14, perdendo) e consegna la medaglia di bronzo ai rossoneri.

Lo spettacolo vero è sugli spalti, dove i tanti tifosi di entrambe le tifoserie incitano a gran voce i beniamini con i rispettivi cori. Per il Lewes è un ragazzino di circa tredici anni a guidare i canti dei suoi, che rispondono con entusiasmo. Lo fanno ancora più convinti dopo l’11’, minuto in cui si sblocca la partita: Tamplin, mezzala con grandi tempi di inserimento, viene liberato in area, dove controlla e batte Foster per il vantaggio della squadra del sud-est del Regno Unito. Alla mezz’ora Sablier ci prova da fuori, ma non trova la porta. Il Lewes ha oltre il 70% del possesso palla, ma sceglie di non schiacciare sull’acceleratore. Prova a farlo l’Enfield Town, ma solo in ripartenza: al 36′ Youngs attacca lo spazio, si presenta davanti a Bull, ma il suo tentativo di scavetto è censurabile.

Al rientro in campo mr. Macpherson presenta un sistema differente, tornando alla difesa a tre ed inserendo un giocatore offensivo in più. Gli azzurri acquistano ordine, ma la palla continuano a gestirla gli altri. Al quarto d’ora Lumbombo-Kalala calcia da fuori, potente ma alto. Senza nessun preavviso e nonostante il match sia sotto il controllo dell’avversario, al 17′ l’Enfield Town trova il pareggio. Il merito va a Onyeajwara, che si fa dare palla da calcio d’angolo e dal vertice sinistro dell’area trova un collo pieno che passa tra mille gambe e si insacca nell’angolino lontano.

Russell inserisce una prima punta come Whelpdale per dare più peso al suo attacco. La mossa è azzeccata. Al 27′ il numero 11 taglia bene verso la porta, ma strozza il mancino. Al 47′, con la sfida ai rigori dietro l’angolo, il tap-in vincente, scaturito da un’azione insistita sulla linea di fondo di Sablier. Mentre le due finaliste si scaldano, il Lewes festeggia il meritato terzo posto. L’Enfield Town non si dispera: la stagione ha portato la promozione in sesta serie, si andrà avanti a fare baldoria al ritorno nella cittadina londinese.

A goal scored in the last minute decided the third-place playoff of the Fenix Trophy 2024. The all-English clash between Enfield Town and Lewes, two teams familiar with each other as they compete in the same English league division, went in favor of the latter, who managed to prevail with a score of 2-1.

The game was dominated by Lewes but slowed down significantly by the intense heat and reduced motivation. Despite this, it remained balanced due to the defensive strength of Enfield Town, coupled with the inability to convert chances of Mr. Russell’s men. Whelpdale’s strike in the 90th minute ensured the match didn’t go to penalties again (Enfield had taken 14 on Friday, losing) and secured the bronze medal for the red and blacks.

The real spectacle is in the stands, where the many fans from both sides passionately cheer on their sides with their respective chants. For Lewes, it’s a young boy about 13 years old, leading the chants for his team, and they respond with enthusiasm. Their voices grew even louder after the 11th minute, the moment when the game opens up: Tamplin, a midfielder with excellent timing on his runs, is released in the box, where he controls and beats Foster to give the southeast UK team the lead.

At the half-hour mark, Sablier tries from distance but misses the target. Lewes has over 70% possession but chooses not to push too hard. Enfield Town tries to counter, and at the 36th minute, Youngs attacks the space, finds himself in front of Bull, but his attempted chip is off target.

Returning for the second half, Mr. Macpherson adjusts the formation, reverting to a back three and adding an extra attacking player. The blues gain structure, but the opposition continue to control the ball. At the hour mark, Lumbombo-Kalala shoots from outside the box, powerful but just over the bar. Without warning and despite the opponent’s control, Enfield Town equalizes at the 17th minute. Credit goes to Onyeajwara, who receives the ball from a corner kick and from the left corner of the area, finds the net through a crowded box that passes through a thousand legs and nestles into the far corner.

Russell introduces a striker in Whelpdale to add weight to his attack. The move pays off. In the 27th minute, the number 11 cuts well towards the goal but misses with his left foot. In the 47th minute, with penalties looming, the winning tap-in emerges from a persistent action on the goal line by Sablier. As the two finalists warm up, Lewes celebrates their well-deserved third-place finish. Enfield Town does not despair: the season has brought promotion to the sixth tier, and they will continue to revel upon their return to the London town.
