Il 24 ottobre 2023 alla Zlicin Arena di Praga iniziava il cammino del Fenix Trophy 2024, terza edizione di un torneo continentale itinerante pensato come progetto ambizioso di speranza nei mesi più duri di pandemia e realizzato a partire dalla stagione 2021-2022. Unire l’Europa attraverso il calcio dilettantistico sembrava utopia, è diventato realtà. In quel primo esperimento ad esultare fu lo United of Manchester, trascinato dai propri tifosi nella finale di Rimini. La storia si è ripetuta, oggi, a Desenzano. Proprio contro la rappresentante della capitale ceca, arrivata per la terza volta in finale e per la terza volta battuta. I Red Rebels battono con un perentorio 4-0 il Prague Raptors e scrivono nuovamente il proprio nome sull’albo d’oro della manifestazione.

Col senno di poi, la vera finale si era forse giocata venerdì, nel primo match della final four: United contro Lewes, derby inglese che aveva premiato i rossi nonostante ai punti, forse, meritassero i ragazzi venuti dal paese poco lontano da Brighton. La grande solidità difensiva ed una fisicità sopra la media avevano mandato avanti gli uomini di mr. Reynolds, mentre i Raptors buttavano fuori l’Enfield Town, fresco di promozione dalla settima alla sesta serie inglese, dopo un numero fuori scala di calci di rigore: ben 28. Due sfide totalmente equilibrate. Non si può dire la stessa cosa della finalissima odierna.

Il gap atletico e fisico appare ancora più marcato fin dai primi minuti. Il Prague non cambia uomini ma cambia sistema rispetto a due giorni fa, passando a difendere a quattro; nessuna novità invece per il Manchester, schierato con un 4-3-3 che vuole accendere la velocità e la creatività dei suoi due esterni d’attacco, Bennett e Gabidon, i migliori giocatori visti al “Tre Stelle-Francesco Ghizzi” in questi giorni. Il primo vincerà il premio di mvp del torneo durante le premiazioni.

Due gol per tempo, imbattibilità di Murray-Jones difesa, tante possibilità per rendere ancora più largo il punteggio. Lo United è un fiume in piena che travolge i Raptors. Nella prima mezz’ora sono già molteplici le occasioni mancate: Buckley ne fallisce un paio, di testa e in uno contro uno, Gabidon fa impazzire Erakovic (che infatti sarà sostituito all’intervallo), Bennett riesce a calciare di sinistro da buona posizione ma stringe troppo il tiro, Howe deve inventarsi due interventi disperati per mantenere lo 0-0. Al 29′ si rischia la beffa, quando Lopez si divora la chance dello 0-1, servito da Houdek su imbucata del bresciano (ed ex Darfo e Calvina) Rizzi.

Ma al 36′ Jones fa finalmente esplodere il rumoroso tifo rossobianconero: Bennett punta l’uomo sulla linea di fondo, lo ubriaca e serve in orizzontale l’inserimento del centrale difensivo, salito per il corner, che da due passi mette in rete. Al primo di recupero Bennett fa 2-0, servito da Buckley a campo aperto, dopo aver saltato agevolmente il portiere.

Nella ripresa il Prague prova il massimo sforzo per rientrare, ma così facendo si sbilancia e diventa ancora più vulnerabile. Il monologo United prosegue: al quarto d’ora Gabidon recupera palla alta e guida un tre contro uno, decidendo di fare da solo: dribbling all’ultimo difensore e grande freddezza con Banzon in uscita. Meno di dieci minuti più tardi Bennett spacca la traversa con un fulmine mancino, infine al 30′ il neoentrato Gilboy chiude i conti lanciato in campo aperto.

Il 4-0, risultato pesante, non toglie onore al Prague Raptors: ci riproveranno tra un anno a rompere la maledizione del secondo posto. Per lo United of Manchester, invece, la festa è appena iniziata. Dopo la vittoria alle finali di Rimini nel 2021-2022 ed il terzo posto di un anno fa a Milano, ecco il secondo Fenix Trophy. Congratulations, Red Rebels!

On the 24th of October 2023, at the Zlicin Arena in Prague, the journey to the Fenix Trophy 2024 began, the third edition of a intercontinental tournament designed as an ambitious project of hope during the toughest months of the pandemic and achieved for the first time during the 2021-2022 season. Uniting Europe through amateur football seemed like a utopia, but it became a reality. In that first experiment, FC United of Manchester celebrated, propelled by their fans to the final in Rimini. History repeated itself today in Desenzano, this time against the representative from the Czech capital, who reached the final for the third time only to be defeated for the third time. The Red Rebels triumphed with a resounding 4-0 victory over the Prague Raptors and once again inscribed their name on the event’s honor roll.

In hindsight, the real final was perhaps played on Friday, in the first match of the final four: FC United versus Lewes, an English derby that favored the Reds despite, perhaps, the boys from the town not far from Brighton deserving the win. The great defensive solidarity and above-average physicality had propelled Mr. Reynolds’ men forward, while the Raptors knocked out Enfield Town, freshly promoted from the seventh to the sixth division of English football, after an absurd number of penalties: a whopping 28. Two completely balanced challenges. The same cannot be said for today’s final showdown.

The athletic and physical gap appears even more pronounced from the first minutes. Prague doesn’t change personnel but alters its formation compared to two days ago, shifting to a four-man defense; no changes for Manchester, lined up in a 4-3-3 formation aiming to ignite the speed and creativity of its two wingers, Bennett and Gabidon, the standout players seen at the “Tre Stelle-Francesco Ghizzi” over the last couple of days. The former of the two ends up winning the tournament’s MVP award during the final ceremony.

Two goals per half, Murray-Jones’ unbeaten defense, plenty of chances to widen the score even further. United is a torrential force overwhelming the Raptors. In the first half-hour, numerous missed opportunities abound: Buckley misses a couple, with a header and in a one-on-one, Gabidon bewilders Erakovic (who will indeed be substituted at halftime), Bennett manages to shoot with his left foot from a good position but narrows the shot too much, Howe must pull off two desperate interventions to maintain the 0-0 scoreline. At the 29th minute, there’s a risk of a setback when Lopez squanders the chance for a 0-1 lead, served by Houdek with a through ball from the Brescia-born (and former Darfo and Calvina) Rizzi.

But at the 36th minute, Jones finally ignites the raucous red-and-white-black crowd: Bennett takes on the man on the baseline, dribbles past him, and serves the central defender, who had ventured forward for the corner, from two steps away, putting it into the net. In the first minute of added time, Bennett makes it 2-0, served by Buckley in open field, after easily bypassing the goalkeeper.

In the second half, Prague makes the utmost effort to come back, but in doing so, they become even more vulnerable by losing balance. The United monologue continues: fifteen minutes in, Gabidon retrieves a high ball and leads a three-on-one, opting to go alone: dribbling past the last defender and displaying great composure against the advancing Banzon. Less than ten minutes later, Bennett smashes the crossbar with a left-footed thunderbolt, and finally, at the 30th minute, the substitute Gilboy seals the deal after being launched into open field.

The 4-0, a heavy result, does not take away the honor from the Prague Raptors: they will try again next year to break the curse of second place. For FC United of Manchester, however, the celebration has just begun. After the victory in the finals in Rimini in 2021-2022 and the third place a year ago in Milan, here is their second Fenix Trophy. Congratulations, Red Rebels!
